At BBBSAZ, we focus on creating powerful mentoring relationships that not only inspire and empower our youth “Littles” but also their mentors “Bigs”. Today, we’d like to introduce you to three inspiring Big and Little “Matches” and share their success stories.
Kaeleigh’s mother enrolled her into the BBBS program because she wanted Kaeleigh to have a positive mentor outside of the home with whom she could create a strong and dependable relationship with; a Big for Kaeleigh to help direct her interest and excitement towards new/different activities. She was also hoping that by enrolling in the Program, Kaeleigh could develop greater confidence. Heather became a Big Sister because she wanted to give back by getting more involved with the community. In January 2015, Little Sister Kaeleigh and Big Sister Heather were matched. The pair loves to spend time together baking, eating pho, drawing, and watching movies. Kaeleigh and Heather also share a common goal to explore new and fun positive experiences together. Witnessing each other’s life changes (Kaeleigh was even in attendance at Heather’s wedding) has only strengthened their friendship.
Eli’s mother enrolled him into the BBBS program because she wanted him to have a positive one-on-one relationship with a good role model. Eli’s mother also wanted him to have a mentor to help encourage him to open up more. Javier had previously known about the BBBS program, and he became a Big Brother because he wanted to help by getting more involved with the community. In March 2022, Little Brother Eli and Big Brother Javier were matched. The pair enjoy bowling, hiking, and playing sports at the park. Eli and Javier celebrated their match anniversary by going to dinner together at the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament; they had a fun time and enjoyed each other’s company. Eli and Javier work towards Eli’s goal of expanding his support system.
Alvion’s mother enrolled him into the BBBS program because she wanted him to have a positive adult mentor outside of the home who could introduce him to different life experiences. One of the reasons Shawn became a Big is because he knew he could make a positive impact on the youth in the community. In February 2022, Little Brother Alvion and Big Brother Shawn were matched. The pair enjoy hanging out together and discussing life, school, and friends. Alvion and Shawn also enjoy spending time going to the movies, going to the park, and playing baseball. Shawn also helps Alvion with the goal of developing and utilizing different coping techniques. Together they’ve created a great friendship and that relationship only continues to grow.
To positively impact the next generation, we should all strive to be like these mentors. To learn more about how you can get involved, please visit our website or please email our Director of Community Outreach, Patrick Phillips, at pphillips@bbbsaz.org.
