This November, history was made as Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) took part in the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the very first time. It was an unforgettable experience for thirty Bigs and their Littles who were chosen from a nationwide talent search to perform on the beloved Macy’s Singing Christmas Tree float. Among the lucky fifteen matches selected were Jose Carlos and Juan Carlos, the Big and Little of the Year, from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona.
For Jose Carlos and Juan Carlos, this was not just a trip to New York City; it was a dream come true. The pair traveled together with their families and guests They, along with their families and guests, embarking on a journey from the West Coast to the bustling streets of the Big Apple. They were greeted with style upon their arrival, as a driver and a private car awaited them at the airport. The excitement of the week continued as they explored the city, indulging in classic New York activities like sightseeing, ice skating, and savoring a slice of New York pizza. Amidst the fun, Jose Carlos and Juan Carlos also dedicated themselves to countless hours of rehearsal under the guidance of the world-renowned Choral Director, Judith Clurman. They were even surprised by a visit from Artis Stephens, the CEO of BBBSA, during one of their rehearsals.
Thanksgiving Day was an early start for the matches, as they lined up before the streets closed down for the parade. Excitement ran high as they loaded up around the tree, ready to sing their hearts out for all to hear. With over 80 performances throughout the parade route, the matches had their work cut out for them, but their enthusiasm and energy never wavered.
As the float made its way along the route, families and guests watched in awe. The sight of the singers on the Macy’s Singing Christmas Tree float brought tears to their eyes. It was a magical moment that will forever be etched in their memories. After the parade, the matches were reunited with their families and had the opportunity to share a Thanksgiving meal, cherishing the special bond they had formed with each other and their new friends.
