Ah, the Fall Match Picnic in Tempe—a day where the sun shone brighter than a freshly polished apple and the weather was as amazing as finding a $20 bill in an old pair of jeans. Picture this: 40 matches gathered in the park, ready to indulge in a day filled with laughter, games, and perhaps a little too much Kona Ice.
The event was a delightful concoction of fun and food. With pizza slices disappearing faster than you can say “pepperoni,” and a match generously sharing chips, it was a culinary delight. As for activities, we had everything from flag football to a water balloon toss that left everyone either soaked or laughing—sometimes both! Even dodgeball made an appearance because nothing says “bonding” like dodging a rubber ball at 10 mph.
Our matches, along with the amazing BBBS Staff, CEO Luis Vega, and volunteers from Renewal by Andersen, were in high spirits. There were also table games and painting activities for those who preferred a more leisurely pace. Looking around, it was hard not to smile as matches sat together, laughing, eating, and simply enjoying each other’s company.
Prizes were won, and as I stood in the shade, sipping on my pizza (yes, you read that right), I couldn’t help but marvel at the incredible impact our Bigs have on their Littles. They may not realize it, but just by having fun and being positive role models, they are making a world of difference.
Oh, and just as I was lost in thought, a whistle blew. Coach Ed was lifting a Little high into the air, and cheers erupted as the young champ had just led his team to victory in the flag football game. It was a moment of pure joy and camaraderie.
