10 FAQ’s about being a Big

Have you ever thought of becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister but have some questions before making the commitment? We have prepared some Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a Big!

  1. What exactly does a Big do?

Bigs are adult volunteer mentors over the age of 18 looking to give back through mentoring a youth in their community. We ask Bigs to commit to seeing their Little 2-4 times a month.

  1. What type of support do Bigs receive?

We offer training for volunteers, ongoing support from Program Specialists, and resources to help navigate the mentoring relationship.

  1. What expenses are included when volunteering?

There is no cost for Littles to participate in the program. Bigs may have some expenses for activities, but our ThinkBig website offers free to low-cost tickets to sporting events and museums to help with this.

  1. Who are the mentees “Littles”?

Our Littles are between the ages of 6-18; however we typically do not enroll youth into our program after the age of 15. Youth can stay in our program until they graduate from high school. All children and their families have to have the desire to be in our program. Every child we enroll expresses interest in having a Big.

  1. How is a Match made?

Our Enrollment and Matching Specialists pair a Match based on shared interests, personalities, and location.

  1. What type of activities do Matches do together?

Activities can vary widely and may include outdoor adventures such as going to a park or hiking. Some Matches spend their time talking over ice cream or going to see a movie. This can be anything you both find enjoyable!

  1. Can I volunteer with my spouse or children?

Absolutely! We have the option of enrolling you as a couple or family match. Couple and family matches will be matched to a Little whose family has already agreed to the couple and family match terms. Your children and/or spouse will also be interviewed.
