(Phoenix, AZ) – As the need for mentors continues across the Valley, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) is calling on more adults to step forward and become a Big, giving young people the opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with a caring, consistent mentor.
Behind that need are young people looking for someone who will show up, spend time with them and take an interest in their lives. BBBSAZ sees firsthand what can happen when someone answers that call.
Sometimes, answering that call looks simple. It might start over lunch, at a basketball game, in the kitchen, or simply with two people discovering something they have in common.
For Carlos and Nathaniel, their connection began in November 2022. As a Site-Based Plus match, they spend time together during Nathaniel’s lunch period and also connect through activities in the community. Their shared love of sports quickly became common ground, with the pair attending sporting events and finding new sports-related activities to experience together.
Over time, those shared experiences have helped turn a simple connection into a meaningful relationship built on consistency, trust and the willingness to keep showing up.
Andrew and JJ’s story demonstrates that same power in a different way.
Matched in December 2023 through BBBSAZ’s Community-Based program, Andrew and JJ found connection in the kitchen and especially enjoy cooking together. Their friendship became even more meaningful when life temporarily took them in different directions.
After JJ relocated, their match came to an end. When he later returned to the area, the two were able to reconnect and become matched again. Today, their friendship continues to grow.
Their reunion is a reminder that mentorship is not defined by a single outing, activity or conversation. Its power is found in the relationship that develops when a young person knows there is another person in their corner.
MORE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE WAITING FOR THEIR PERSON
Carlos and Nathaniel and Andrew and JJ are examples of what is possible when an adult makes the choice to mentor. Across the Valley, more young people are waiting for the opportunity to build a connection of their own.
BBBSAZ is asking the community to help close that gap.
Becoming a mentor does not require having all the answers. It does not require being perfect. It starts with being present, being consistent and being willing to share your time.
A meal can become a tradition. A shared interest can become common ground. A conversation can build confidence. A few hours together can grow into a relationship that matters to both the Big and the Little.
The need for mentors is high, and the opportunity to make a difference is here.
BBBSAZ is calling on adults throughout the Valley to answer that need and consider becoming a Big.
Because somewhere in our community, a young person is waiting for someone to show up.
Could that someone be you?
ANSWER THE CALL. BECOME A BIG.
